On 22 September 2026 a clothing retail business rang Vridhii and said they had found us through a Google search. The call arrived on a direct dial. We display no phone number anywhere on vridhiidigital.com, on any of the 142 pages we counted this morning, so the number was almost certainly read off our Google Business Profile listing and typed into a phone. Nothing we measure could have counted that call. It is the fourth cold enquiry to reach us since the April 2026 relaunch, and the second we know about only because the caller volunteered where they came from.
This is the Wednesday slot, which is where we publish our own numbers whether or not they flatter us. Today's number is small and the honest reading of it is uncomfortable, so both go in.
What actually happened on 22 September?
A clothing retailer called. Anurag took it. Asked how they found us, they said Google, and said it was a search rather than an ad, which matters because our first ads went live the same morning. The route in was a direct dial, not the WhatsApp button and not the contact form.
We read our own site the same day to check what that implies. Across 142 HTML pages in the repository, exactly zero display a phone number in visible text and zero carry a tel link. The number appears 742 times in the source and every one of those is inside a WhatsApp link. That is a house rule we set deliberately, and it has a consequence we had not thought through: 141 pages offer the WhatsApp button, 130 carry the enquiry form, and the site offers no third route. The caller used a third route anyway.
The only place our number sits in public, formatted so a person can dial it, is the Google Business Profile listing. We cannot prove that is where they read it, and we will not claim it. What we can say is that no page on the site could have given it to them.
Why could none of our analytics see it?
Because the call never touched the website. GA4 measures what happens on pages we own. A person who sees a listing in Search or Maps, reads the number off it and dials from their own keypad leaves no trace on any page, so no session begins, no event fires, and no source is recorded.
Google closed part of this gap in June 2026. The native Google Business Profile link inside GA4, documented by GA4 Optimizer on 11 June 2026, pulls seven profile metrics into Analytics without any tagging: interactions, website clicks, calls, directions, messages, bookings and menus. It is a real improvement on the old position, where the only way to see anything was a UTM parameter on the website link, which by definition captured only the people who clicked through.
It still would not have caught this one. The calls metric counts taps on the call button inside Search or Maps. A number copied by eye and dialled from the phone app is not a profile call, so it is not one of the seven. The same source notes two further limits worth knowing before anyone builds a report on it: the imported data sits on a rolling six month window rather than the fourteen months standard web data gets, and the metrics are locked to standard reports and cannot be used in explorations.
The measurement you can buy tells you about the people who behaved the way your tracking expects. The four calls we have had since April arrived in four different ways, and the only reliable instrument so far has been asking the caller a question.
What does the pattern look like across all four calls?
Four cold enquiries have reached us since the relaunch in April, all of them between 7 and 22 September. Before that, from April to 5 September, the count was zero, and roughly thirty leads worked in that period all came warm through referrals and Anurag's own network.
The 7 September caller was an interior design prospect who said they found us through ChatGPT. The 8 September caller attributed a Google search. The 15 September enquiry was a second interior designer. The 22 September call was the clothing retailer. Two of the four named Google, one named ChatGPT, and the fourth we have not pinned down.
Two things in that list are worth saying out loud. The first is that none of the four came from a vertical we have been writing for on purpose. Our rotation covers schools, clinics, B2B manufacturing, D2C and professional services. Interiors arrived uninvited and now has its own cluster. Clothing retail has exactly one post on this site, a festive season playbook from 3 August 2026, and it produced a call anyway.
The second is that four calls in sixteen days is not a trend. It is four calls. We are publishing the count because the count is real, not because it proves the system works. Ask us again in December.
What are we changing because of it?
Three things, none of them expensive.
We now ask every caller two questions before anything else: where they saw us, and what they typed. Attribution software would have captured neither on 22 September. A question captured both in about nine seconds.
We are treating the Google Business Profile as a page rather than a listing. It carries a description, a category, photos, posts and reviews, and for a business in Sainikpuri it is very likely the first surface a stranger in north Hyderabad ever sees. We have written before about the mistakes that keep Hyderabad businesses out of the map pack, and we were slower than we should have been to apply that to our own profile.
And we are connecting the profile to GA4 under no illusions. It will show us profile calls and direction requests, which is more than zero. It will not show us the manual dials, and a report that quietly treats the visible number as the whole number is worse than no report at all.
What should you take from this if you run a business in Hyderabad?
If your customers phone you, a meaningful share of those calls are invisible to your analytics, and the smaller and more local your business, the larger that share is likely to be. Footfall from a Maps listing, a number copied into WhatsApp, a friend forwarding your profile: none of it appears in a dashboard.
That has one practical consequence. Do not let a channel be judged solely by what your tracking can see, and do not let a person be hired or fired on a dashboard that cannot see the phone. Keep a written log of how every enquiry says it found you. It takes a minute a day and after three months it is better data than anything you could have bought.
This is one chapter of a larger framework. The Marketing Operating System is how we keep this work accountable week by week instead of in a quarterly report nobody opens. If local search is where your buyers find you, our SEO and AI search work is the relevant piece, and inbound marketing covers the pages the profile should be pointing at. If you would rather have a team handle this, Vridhii Digital builds growth systems for founders who care about results. Message us on WhatsApp and tell us how your last customer said they found you.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if calls from Google are reaching me at all?
Open the performance view inside your Google Business Profile. It reports calls made from the call button on Search and Maps. That figure is a floor rather than a total, because anyone who reads your number and dials it manually is never counted.
Does linking my Business Profile to Google Analytics fix this?
Partly. Since June 2026 the native link brings calls, directions, bookings and four other profile metrics into GA4 without tagging. Manual dials still do not appear, the data only goes back six months, and the metrics cannot be used in explorations.
Should I put my phone number on my website?
It depends on who answers it. We do not, because we would rather a first conversation start in writing. If you run a shop or a clinic where a call is the sale, publish it, make it a tappable link, and accept that some of those calls will never be attributable.
We get calls but we have no idea what people searched for. What is the cheapest fix?
Ask them, and write the answer down the same day in a shared sheet with the date, the source they named and the words they used. Three months of that costs nothing and tells you more than most attribution tools will.
