To check whether AI search cites your business, write down ten to fifteen queries a stranger would type before they know your name, run them in the same engines on the same weekday every week, and record three things for each: whether your domain appeared as a link, whether your business was named in the written answer, and which page of yours the engine used. One run tells you almost nothing. The field behind a single query churns week to week, so the only reading that means anything is the trend across consecutive checks, and the only number worth reporting to anyone is a return that holds.
We have run this method every week since 12 June 2026. Here is what the 92 non brand checks since then have taught us about doing it properly, including a result from this morning that changed how we read our own tracker.
Why does one run tell you nothing?
Because the answer to any category query is assembled fresh from whichever pages the engine retrieved that day, and that set moves. On the query AI optimisation agency India, 37 distinct agencies appeared across our first 10 tracked runs between 12 June and 10 August, and 21 of them appeared exactly once. A founder who ran that query one Monday and saw a competitor would conclude the competitor had won the category. The next Monday the competitor was gone. From 12 June to 31 August our own name returned zero times on every category query we tracked, across 48 consecutive checks, and the zeros were not a verdict either. They were a baseline that only became useful once something changed against it.
The GEO agency field in Hyderabad shows the same churn from the other side. On 30 August the query returned two Hyderabad providers. On 4 September it returned six, and this morning it returned Groview, Vasishtha Digital, ThatWare, AdRankify, RajuSEO and GetCito, none of which is one of the four established agencies we watch. Anyone measuring this category monthly would have missed the entire fill.
What are the three columns to log?
Link present, named in the answer, and page used. They are three different outcomes and the difference between them is the most useful thing the tracker has shown us.
On 2 September our comparison page for small business agencies in Hyderabad appeared as one of six links on its target query, 23 days after publishing. The written answer quoted the page's verdicts about ShootOrder, Digital Mojo and Emblix and did not mention Vridhii at all. The same shape repeated on 4 September and again on 7 September. Three consecutive returns, three answers in which we were the source and not the recommendation. If we had logged only the link column we would have called this a win three times. It was a citation without a mention, and a prospect reading that answer would have hired someone else on our advice.
This morning, 11 September 2026, the 16th tracked check of that query returned the page for the fourth consecutive time, and for the first time the written answer named Vridhii Digital, as the fit for founders who want design and growth under one roof. Same page, same query, same six links, and one column flipped from no to yes after three checks in which it had not. Nothing on the page changed between 7 September and today. That is why the column exists: a mention arrives later than a link, if it arrives, and you will not see it unless you are reading the answer and not just the source list.
The third column, page used, matters because engines do not always pick the page you built for the query. On 4 September the query digital marketing agency in Sainikpuri returned that same Hyderabad comparison page rather than our Sainikpuri landing page. Today the same query returned the homepage instead, and led the answer with it. Two different pages of ours have now carried a local query that a dedicated local page was written to hold. Until you log which URL the engine chose, you cannot know which page is doing the work, and you will keep optimising the wrong one.
Which queries belong in the set?
Four groups, and once the list is written it is never edited, only added to, or the trend line breaks. Local queries, such as marketing agency near ECIL Hyderabad, where the competition is mostly Justdial and Sulekha. Category and shortlist queries, the ones a buyer types before a cheque, such as best digital marketing agency in Hyderabad for small business, where ZeroAdo's self published listicles and the Clutch directory hold the field week after week. Vertical queries, such as digital marketing for clinics Hyderabad. And the brand query, which you will pass every time and which is only there to confirm the engine can find you at all.
Watch for name confusion in the local group. Our Sainikpuri query regularly returns pages for Sainik Farms and Janakpuri in Delhi, and Clutch once surfaced an agency called Saini Digital as a match. A weak field like that is partly why a small business surfaces on it. Log the confusion rather than celebrating the return, because a field that thin will fill the moment a competitor writes one decent page, which is exactly what happened on the Kompally query on 7 September when agency owned locality pages outnumbered directories for the first time.
When does a result count?
When it holds across three consecutive checks, and we would argue not before. Our rule since 2 September has been that the small business query must return on 7, 14 and 21 September before the page is treated as held, and today's fourth return does not shorten that. The reason for the discipline is the churn described above. A page that surfaces once has been retrieved once. A page that surfaces four times in nine days, with the answer shape stable and then improving, is a page the engine has decided is a reliable source for that question. Those are different facts and only the second one is worth telling a client.
The same rule applies to the third party pages you cannot control. Since June the Clutch small business directory page for Hyderabad and the soravjain listicle have returned on the category query on almost every check. Those pages are what the engine trusts, which means being listed on them accurately is a citation strategy in its own right. Our own Agency Spotter profile, checked again this morning on the brand query, still shows no reviews and a description written in 2018, and an engine corroborating across sources reads that disagreement.
How do you connect a citation to a phone call?
Two ways, and both are unglamorous. First, ask every enquiry how they found you and write the answer beside the tracker, because a link in an answer and a prospect who acted on it are separate events and only the caller can join them. Second, watch the referral sources in your analytics for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com. SE Ranking's study of 101,574 websites found ChatGPT referral traffic rose 36.7 percent in May 2026 to its highest recorded level, after ChatGPT began showing more prominent links in answers from around 7 May. The traffic is now large enough to see on a small site, but only if someone is looking at the referrer column and asking the question on the phone.
Key takeaway: On 11 September 2026, after three consecutive checks in which the engine quoted our page and left our name out, the fourth check named us. Log the link, the mention and the page used as three separate columns, run the same queries on the same day every week, and report nothing that has not held for three checks.
This is one chapter of the Marketing Operating System we run for every client, the part where visibility is measured weekly against a fixed list rather than reported once from a screenshot. If you want the tracker built and read for you, our SEO and AIO services for Hyderabad businesses include the query set, the weekly run and the three column log, and the earlier chapters cover writing an FAQ that gets quoted and why engines cannot confirm where your business is. If you would rather have a team handle this, Vridhii Digital builds growth systems for founders who care about results. Message us on WhatsApp with the three queries you most want to be found on.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just ask ChatGPT whether it knows my company?
You can, but it answers the brand query, which nearly every business passes. The useful test is the category query a stranger types before they know your name, such as best SEO agency Secunderabad. Log that one weekly, not the brand one.
Which engines should I run the queries in?
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode at minimum, because they cite differently. Our own tracker runs through a web search proxy, which is a limitation we state on every entry. Use the same engines and the same weekday every time so the trend line means something.
How long before a new page shows up in AI answers?
Our first category return came 23 days after publishing, on 2 September 2026. The B2B listicle published on 27 July had not surfaced after 37 days. Budget six to twelve weeks, and treat a single appearance as noise until it holds across three consecutive checks.
Is there a tool that does this automatically?
Several paid trackers now exist, and they are useful for volume. For a single business a spreadsheet with the query, the date, the three columns and the competing sources is enough, and reading the answers yourself is where the useful pattern shows up.
