This morning we ran the seven fixed queries we check every Friday and read the first ten results of each. Forty of the seventy were directory or review platform pages. Clutch held sixteen, Semrush Agency Partners nine, DesignRush five. The small business query returned ten directory pages out of ten. Three results in seventy belonged to a Hyderabad agency's own website, and none of the three was ours. For two months this site has written about competitors holding the queries we want. This month the competitors left and the directories moved in, and the practical response is different: you cannot out write a directory, you can only be listed in it, accurately, with a page of your own for it to link to. This is the Friday post on AI search that the missed 23 October slot owed, and it is a how to.
A word on the words. Search engine optimisation, SEO for short, is showing up on Google without paying per click. AI search optimisation, AIO on this site, is being the business ChatGPT, Gemini or an AI search tool names when someone asks a question. The tool reads the pages a search engine returns, so whoever holds those pages decides what it has to read about you.
What the seven queries returned today
Best digital marketing agency in Hyderabad for small business: ten of ten directory pages, eight of them Clutch list pages for small business, enterprise and ecommerce agencies in Hyderabad, and two DesignRush profiles. AI search optimisation agency India: seven Semrush Agency Partners list pages, two news listicles and one agency page. GEO agency Hyderabad: two IRPR city pages, two Socio Labs pages, a registry entry, a business directory, the Wikipedia page for the Hyderabad disaster response agency, a Geojit branch page and an audiobook; the acronym still means several things in this city. Digital marketing agency Kompally: four Wildnet city pages, two Clutch profiles, a Sortlist profile for a Paris agency called Komop, a Ukrainian agency on G2. The UK query: nine directory pages, four of them Clutch list pages deep in the hundreds. The Dubai query: six directories and four listicles, with The Go-To Guy, a Hyderabad agency with a Dubai office, named again in the summary. The outsourcing query: five vendor explainers, a UK forum thread, two news items, a G2 profile.
The original number. Across the 7 fixed non brand queries run on 30 October 2026, the first 10 results of each were counted, 70 in all: 40 directory or review platform pages (Clutch 16, Semrush Agency Partners 9, DesignRush 5, G2 3, Sortlist, Refrens, Techreviewer, The Manifest, a company registry, a business directory and an IndiaMART page), 16 agency owned pages (Wildnet 4, IRPR 2, Socio Labs 2, Social Beat, an SEO firm on a free host, and 6 vendor explainer pages on the outsourcing query), 9 listicles or news items, 5 other. Hyderabad agency owned pages: 3 of 70. Vridhii pages: 0 of 70, and 0 of 10 on the brand query for the third run running, where the DesignRush, Clutch and G2 profiles now lead. Logged as data ledger entry 73, a first party read from the weekly tracker run.
Why the directories hold the field
Because the engine has decided that the honest answer to a best agency for X in Y query is a list, and because the directories have what a list needs: thousands of profiles with the same fields filled the same way, reviews with dates, and a page for every city, size and industry combination a buyer might type. Clutch has a page for small business agencies in Hyderabad and another for enterprise and another for ecommerce. No single agency can match that surface, and trying is how an agency in Noida ends up with four near identical Hyderabad pages ranking for Kompally.
The cost of the directory holding the field is what we found on our own brand query this month. The site did not appear for its own name in three consecutive runs. The DesignRush profile did, describing us with a word we dropped in September, and Clutch and G2 profiles appeared beside it with zero reviews each. The engine's summary of us was assembled from those three profiles. It was accurate, and it was not ours.
The seven step response
One. Run your ten queries and tally the directory share. Forty minutes. If more than half the first page is directories, as it was for us today, the plan below is the plan; if a competitor holds it, our earlier posts apply instead.
Two. Name the two directories that hold your queries. For agencies this month it is Clutch and Semrush Agency Partners, with DesignRush third. For a clinic it was Apollo 24|7 and Lybrate on 27 October; for a manufacturer, IndiaMART on 20 October; for a function hall, VenueLook and WedMeGood on 22 October. The count tells you, not the industry's habit.
Three. Get listed, in the basic tier first, with the exact strings. The business name spelled as your schema spells it, the registered office and the operating address both, the site link, the service categories you actually sell. Each directory has its own entry conditions and some tie a listing to a product they sell; read the current terms. Paid placement buys position, not accuracy.
Four. Write the profile text yourself, and read it the way an engine would. Every adjective in the profile will be repeated back to a buyer by a tool that cannot tell your old positioning from your new one. Ours still says boutique on one directory, and until 27 October our own homepage schema agreed, which is why the engine did too. Fix the schema first, then the profiles, in that order.
Five. Give the directory a page to link to that answers the query by itself. A profile that links to a homepage hands the buyer a brochure. A profile that links to the page for the exact service in the exact city hands them an answer. Our Sainikpuri pillar has never been the page returned for its own query because its title does not carry the query's words; the fix is on the founder's desk and it is one line.
Six. Point the schema back at the profiles. The sameAs field in your Organization schema should list the directory profiles that carry your name, so the engine joins them to the site rather than to the five similarly named companies that share your results. We added G2 beside DesignRush and Agency Spotter this week; Clutch follows now that its profile has appeared.
Seven. Re run the count monthly, by group. The field changed shape in one week in October. A monthly read by query group, which we now publish on the last Wednesday, catches the change while the response is still a listing and a page, not a lost quarter.
What this means if you run a business in Hyderabad
Our reads this month found zero business owned websites in four trades across 137 first page results, and the pages that held those results were directories: IndiaMART for parts, Apollo 24|7 and Lybrate for doctors, VenueLook for halls, carhp for garages, Clutch for agencies. The directories are not a wall against you. They are the front door, and the door is open to anyone with an accurate listing and a page worth linking to. The AI search page describes how we run the count and the listings for a business that would rather not, and the Marketing Operating System is the weekly rhythm that noticed the field change on a Saturday and had the first fix in by Tuesday.
Frequently asked questions
Which directories hold the results for a Hyderabad agency's queries?
On 30 October 2026, across the seven fixed queries we check every Friday, Clutch held 16 of 70 first page results, Semrush Agency Partners 9 and DesignRush 5. The small business query was ten directory pages out of ten, eight of them Clutch list pages. Which directories hold your trade's queries is a forty minute count, and it is different for a clinic (Apollo 24|7, Lybrate), a manufacturer (IndiaMART) or a function hall (VenueLook, WedMeGood).
Is a directory listing enough on its own?
No. The listing gets you into the result; the page it links to is what the engine reads about you and what the buyer clicks. Our own DesignRush profile describes us as a boutique agency, a word we dropped in September, and the engine repeated it this month because our schema still carried it. A listing you do not maintain speaks for you in words you did not choose.
Do I need the paid tier?
Start with whatever free or basic profile each directory offers, because the fields that matter, the exact business name, the address, the site link and the service categories, are usually in the basic tier. Each directory sets its own entry conditions and some tie a listing to a product subscription, so read the current terms rather than assume. Paid placement buys position on the list, not accuracy, and accuracy is what the engine joins to your site.
How does a listing connect to AI search optimisation?
AI search optimisation, AIO on this site, is being the business an AI tool names when someone asks a question. The tool reads the pages the search engine returns, and this month those pages are directories. A listing with your exact name, your address and a link to your site gives the tool a record it can join to your own pages, which is how the five similarly named companies stop being confused with you. Our 9 October post on the two founding years is the same lesson from the other side.
