Open Google Trends for India, type AI marketing, and read the rising queries. This autumn they were not buyers looking for help. They were multiple choice questions. Which of the following best describes Adobe Firefly. True or false: generative AI can create on brand assets. A scenario about Amit, who runs a travel agency in Jaipur and wants an AI to analyse his bookings. We read those tables on 30 September 2026 and sat with them for two weeks before writing this, because the obvious joke is cheap and the useful reading takes longer.
The useful reading is this. A rising query is a question people typed more this period than last. When the questions rising under AI marketing are exam items, the people typing them are candidates with a second browser tab open during an online certification. That tells a business owner something about the badge on the next vendor's pitch deck, and it is the subject of this Friday post on AI search, which this site calls AI search optimisation (AIO), meaning being the business an AI tool names when someone asks it a question, as distinct from search engine optimisation (SEO), which is being the page a search engine ranks.
The original number. On Google Trends India, read on 30 September 2026 across the 90 day and 12 month windows, the rising related queries under AI marketing and AI agency were substantially certification quiz questions: the Adobe Firefly item, the true or false on generative AI and brand assets, and the Amit in Jaipur scenario among them. The single top rising query under AI marketing was a breakout that read, in full, aeo geo llm seeding ai seo or whatever you want to call it. Trends is a relative index and breakouts can sit on a small base, so this is texture and pattern, not volume. Logged as data ledger entry 54.
Who is actually typing AI marketing in India right now?
Three kinds of people, and the Trends table lets you tell them apart by their grammar. Buyers type nouns: AI marketing agency, AI marketing company Hyderabad. Students type questions with options: which of the following, true or false, Amit runs a travel agency. Practitioners type complaints, and the breakout at the top of the table is the clearest complaint we have seen in a year of reading these tables: aeo geo llm seeding ai seo or whatever you want to call it. Someone, somewhere, was asked to buy one of those five things and could not get a straight answer about which one it was.
We wrote about the naming problem on 2 October, in the post on what to call this work, and about the label losing ground to plain marketing agency on 7 October, in the Trends crossover read. This post is the third leg. If the buyers are few, the practitioners are exasperated, and the students are the largest visible group, then the market for AI marketing in India this autumn is, in search terms, a market for certificates. Vendors respond to that by getting certified. The badge then appears on the proposal in front of you as if it were a result.
What a certificate proves, and what it does not
A certificate proves attention and vocabulary. Somebody sat through the modules, learned that Firefly is Adobe's image model, learned the phrase on brand assets, and passed. That is not nothing. A vendor with the vocabulary can explain the work to you in forty minutes without you having to translate, and if what you need is a translator, hire the vocabulary.
What a certificate cannot prove is that the holder has ever made a business appear in an AI answer where it did not appear before. The course does not include that, because it cannot be examined in a quiz. It can only be shown with a date, a query, a page and a before and after. We know how hard that evidence is to produce because we publish our own every Friday, and most Fridays it is a miss. Our tracker has run 137 non brand checks since June and returned one of our pages 16 times. This morning's run was the first time in five weeks the small business query returned us, at position nine, and we did not change the page in between, so we cannot claim it.
That last sentence is the point. A vendor who has done the work has a list of things they cannot claim. A vendor who has studied the work has a certificate, which claims everything and nothing.
Five checks that separate studied from shipped
One. Ask for one dated query and the page that returned. Not a screenshot of a chat, which can be prompted into saying anything. A query in a customer's words, the date it was run, the tool it was run in, and the address of the page that came back. A vendor who has shipped has a notebook of these, including the misses. A vendor who has studied will offer you a case study with no date on it.
Two. Ask what changed on that page before it returned. This is the question the certificate never asks, because the honest answer is often a plain sentence rather than a technique: we put the colony's name in the heading, we added the registered office beside the studio address, we cut a heading that promised something the page did not deliver. If the answer is a list of tools, you are hearing the syllabus back.
Three. Ask what they call the work, then ask what their customers call it. A vendor who has sat with buyers knows the two answers are different and will say so without being prompted. The breakout query at the top of the Trends table is what happens when the vendor's name for the work and the customer's name for it never meet. If the pitch uses one of the five acronyms in the breakout as if the buyer already knew it, the vendor has been talking to other vendors.
Four. Ask what the engine gets wrong about them. Every business has a record an AI engine cannot reconcile; ours, found last Friday, was two founding years and two addresses. A vendor who has run the check on their own name will tell you theirs in one breath, because they found it and it stung. A vendor who says the engine gets nothing wrong has not looked.
Five. Ask what they would tell you to stop doing. A course teaches additions: add schema, add FAQ blocks, add an answer paragraph. Experience teaches subtractions: stop using the word boutique when you are not one, stop listing three cities when you have an office in one, stop publishing an industry listicle that ranks you first. The second list is the one that costs the vendor a line of their own pitch, which is how you know it was earned.
How to read the badge once you have the answers
Take the badge off the proposal in your head and look at what is left. If the five answers were dated, specific and included a miss or two, the badge was a courtesy and you have found someone who ships. If the five answers kept returning to the syllabus, the badge was the product, and you have found a student. There is nothing wrong with hiring a student; there is something wrong with paying a student at a practitioner's rate on the strength of a quiz.
We say this knowing the tables could read differently by December. Trends is an index, the certification cohorts come in waves, and the breakout complaint could be replaced next quarter by a buyer's noun. We will read the tables again and publish what they say. For now, the rising searches are exam questions, and the market they describe is one in which the badge is easy and the dated result is rare.
Our AI search page describes the work for a business that would rather we ran the five checks on their vendors, or on us. The Marketing Operating System is the weekly rhythm that produces the dated results in the first place, including the ones we would rather not have had to publish.
Frequently asked questions
Does an AI marketing certificate mean a vendor cannot do the work?
No. It means the certificate is not evidence either way. A course proves vocabulary and a few hours of attention. The evidence that someone has shipped is a dated query, the page that returned, and what changed on that page before it did. Ask for those three things and the badge stops mattering.
Why do quiz questions show up in Google Trends at all?
Because Trends reports what people type, and a person sitting an online certification with a second tab open types the question word for word. When enough candidates do it in the same fortnight, the question becomes a rising query. It is a relative index on a small base, so it shows who is searching, not how many.
What should a Hyderabad business ask an AI search vendor first?
Ask which query they want you to return for, in the words a customer would type, and what their own agency returns for today. A vendor who has never run the check on their own name has not run it on anyone's. Our 11 September post sets out the ten minute version of the check.
What is the difference between SEO and AI search optimisation?
Search engine optimisation (SEO) is being the page a search engine ranks. AI search optimisation (AIO) is being the business an AI tool names and describes correctly when someone asks it a question. The second depends on the first and on your records agreeing with each other; a badge covers neither.
